About 65 km from Pune and 80 km from Mumbai, resting at an altitude of 622 m in the lap of Sahyadri mountains, Lonavala is one of the most spectacular hill stations in Pune district of Maharashtra. This little hill town is a perfect hideaway for mountains and monsoons lovers. It is the most visited tourist destination in Maharashtra. It is spread over an area of 38 sq km. The name Lonavla is derived from a Sanskrit word Lonavali – a group of caves. The hill town was developed by Lord Elphinstone in 1871. Lonavala was a part of the Yadava dynasty which was taken over by Marathas.

- Built on the Indrayani River, Bhushi Dam is amongst the most popular place to visit in Lonavala during monsoon. Vivacious water running down the dam makes it look stunning during the rainy season. - At a distance of 12 Km from Lonavala, Karla Caves are the complex cave temples. It is the largest Hinaya Buddhist Chaitya in India and some of its 2000 years old beams are still alive. It takes approximately 20 minutes to climb the stairs of this cave. A sculpture of Buddha seated on a lion supported throne can be seen in the temple. The place offers a breathtaking view from the top. Karla Caves are the finest example of ancient rock-cut caves developed during 2nd century BC and 5th century AD. The oldest of the cave shrine dates back to 160 BC.
- Duke’s Nose or Nagphani is a cliff that provides a breathtaking view of Sahyadri hills. It resembles the hood of a cobra. Popular for adventure sports like rappelling, rock climbing, and valley-crossing, it attracts numerous trekkers. There is a Mahadev temple on the top which is a simply unmissable spot. The place presents a mind-boggling downhill view of the plains.
