Hormones in our body play a very important role. Perfect balance of hormones level is the sign of a healthy body but increasing or decreasing level of hormone level could affect your health. Estrogen is the “female” hormone. Testosterone is the “male” hormone. Although each hormone is identified with specific sex, both are found in women and men. On average, women have higher levels of estrogen and men have more testosterone.
What is estrogen?
The primary function of estrogens in the development of female secondary sexual characteristics. These include the development and regulation of the reproductive system and gender characteristics like underarm hair, the growth of the breasts, regulation of the menstrual cycle etc. In males, estrogen helps in the maturation of the sperm and maintenance of a healthy libido.
Women should always try to control an excessive flow of this hormone because an excessive flow of estrogen could be developing many health-related issues in women.
Let’s know the warning signs of excess estrogen in women:
- Swelling and tenderness in breasts
Many women feel changes in their breasts during their cycle and pregnancy because the breasts are very sensitive to hormones. If you experience sore breasts or if you’ve noticed that they’re swollen more than usual, this can be because of high estrogen.
- Weight gain
If the estrogen level is high then you can gain weight, especially in the hip area. You might also experience bloating, and you can also feel difficulty getting rid of extra weight. This is because your estrogen actually needs to be balanced in order for your body to be able to lose weight and maintain weight loss over time.
- Irregular and heavier periods
you are worried about your hormone levels. Your period is orchestrated carefully and gloriously by the complex dance of multiple hormones. High estrogen could be one culprit, for your irregular periods. High estrogen levels can also be responsible for your period to be heavier. That’s because this hormone is responsible for thickening the lining of your uterus. So if you have more of it, your lining will be more and plentiful.
- Mood swings
Estrogen impacts your mental state and emotions. When your estrogen levels are high, you might experience depression, panic attacks, anxiety, unexplained anger, and other mood issues.
- Hair loss
When estrogen level is high, you may start shedding hair more than you normally would, which can result in noticeable hair loss. Genetic propensity, lifestyle, diet, and overall health could also be a region for hair loss.
