The one-word army that has caught the imagination of the world is Fashion. You can hear men and women of all ages keeping abreast with the latest fashion, discussing it and flaunting it with élan…. All in the name of fashion!! But what exactly is fashion?? Is there a definition for it?? Oxford has defined fashion as “A popular or the latest style of clothing, hair, decoration, or behavior.” “It relates to the production and marketing of new styles of clothing and cosmetics or simply put fashion is a manner of doing something.”
Cambridge Dictionary has defined fashion as “a style that is popular at a particular time, especially in clothes, hair, make-up, etc.” “It includes doing something that is popular at the time.” Collins Dictionary has defined fashion as “the area of activity that involves styles of clothing and appearance.” It has been defined as “a style of clothing or a way of behaving that is popular at a particular time.”
People who follow a particular fashion trend are called fashionable. Wikipedia has defined fashion as a “popular style, especially in clothing, footwear, lifestyle, accessories, makeup, hairstyle, and body. Fashion is a distinctive and often constant trend in the style in which people present themselves.”
Fashion is our sense of clothing and dressing that is deep-rooted in our culture. Tailors and dressmakers along with the textile industry have been responsible for many innovations in fashion timelines over centuries. Diana Vreeland has famously said: “Fashion must be the most intoxicating release from the banality of the world.”
Many fashion designers have defined fashion on their own terms and sensibilities. Amy Smilovic, founder and designer of Tibi has said defined fashion as “Fashion, to me, represents life. When I wear something that makes me feel more…creative, more interesting, stronger, complicated — that’s when I feel the most alive, the most engaged with the world.”
Fashion is a form of expression without the use of words, whether it has a clear definition or not is not important. What is important is that fashion becomes a way to express yourself and your style.
